Nat/JLPT

The Japanese Language NAT-TEST is an examination designed to measure the Japanese-language ability of non-native speakers. It evaluates vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening skills and provides an overall assessment of a candidate’s Japanese proficiency.

The NAT-TEST has five levels, from 5Q to 1Q, with 5Q being the introductory level and 1Q being the most advanced. Its structure is broadly aligned with the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), making it useful for students who want to assess their progress or prepare for further Japanese-language study.

NAT-TEST Levels

The NAT-TEST is divided into five levels:

  • 5Q – broadly comparable to JLPT N5
  • 4Q – broadly comparable to JLPT N4
  • 3Q – broadly comparable to JLPT N3
  • 2Q – broadly comparable to JLPT N2
  • 1Q – broadly comparable to JLPT N1

Each level measures Japanese-language ability through areas such as vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension and listening.

Test Frequency

The NAT-TEST is offered several times throughout the year, although the exact number of test dates and available levels can vary by country and test centre.

In some locations, the examination may be offered up to 12 times a year, while certain levels may be available less frequently. Candidates should always check the latest official schedule for their country before registering.

Preparing for the JLPT

Because the NAT-TEST follows a structure similar to the JLPT, it can be used as a useful way to assess Japanese-language ability before taking the JLPT.

Students can use their NAT-TEST performance to identify areas that need improvement in vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening.

Test Results

Candidates receive a score report showing their overall performance and results in the different sections of the test. Candidates who meet the required passing criteria receive a certificate.

The NAT-TEST certificate may also be used in some cases as evidence of Japanese-language ability for educational or visa-related purposes, depending on the requirements of the institution or authority concerned.

Test Quality and Administration

The Japanese Language NAT-TEST is administered by the NAT-TEST Administration Committee in Japan. The examination is designed to assess the practical Japanese-language ability of non-native speakers and has been conducted internationally for many years.

Candidates are required to follow the identification and examination rules established by the test organisers. Students should always check the latest registration procedures, test dates, fees and test-centre requirements through the official NAT-TEST website before applying.
